In reality, there is really no perfection even with new kitchens featured in magazines and TVs. There will always come a time when things cannot be handled easily. Whether you have a high end kitchen or a simple one, issues would really occur.

These issues do not always have to be handled by professionals by the time you notice it. Some of them can actually be resolved by you.

The following are just some of the most common problems that we can have in our kitchen:

1.   Sink clogging
Do you use a filter for your sink drainer? If not, do so. Sink filters are used so that solid food bits do not clog your sink. They will also save you in case you accidentally dropped a piece of earring in the sink.

Clogging also occurs if there is too much grease being drained. You can address this by boiling some water and pour it to the sink. It works almost all the time. If not, then you need a stronger draining solution.

2.   Staining
If you have white walls in the kitchen, for sure you can see a lot of stains on them. These stains may make your kitchen look dirty. You might have thought of changing the colour of the walls to resolve the problem once and for all.

But did you know that it is even easier to be hygienic with white walls? This is because you can readily see the stains and know where to focus on cleaning rather than have them camouflaged with a darker paint. You will then be just making it easy for bacteria to thrive in the kitchen.

3.   Unstable storage units
Storage units are really essential to make a new kitchen cleaner and well-organised. They range from dish drainers to cabinets and hooks. All of them are used to place kitchen items properly and securely at the same time.

If storage units are unstable, expect that your kitchen will look messy in the next few days. Repair broken parts of your storage units for smoother use.

4.   Rodents and insects
Whether you are living in a rural or an urban area, rodents and insects are really tough to handle. When you are not able to exterminate them at the early stage, they will just keep on multiplying.

You can actually prevent this from happening by making sure that your food items are securely kept and covered. They will then find no reason to dwell in your kitchen.

Once we get tired of our kitchen, the next thing that comes to our mind is renovation. Many would agree that before you jump into new kitchens, you should put ‘comfort’ at the top of your priority list. However, some people are hesitant to do what they want and instead think about what is conventional.

If you think comfort is important for your kitchen, below are some tips that you can follow to have it:

1.   Choose your colour

Most old kitchens use wooden furniture and cabinets. Homeowners are usually keeping the natural colour of wood as they think that would make their kitchen classy. But you do not really have to do the same if you are not comfortable about it.

With the help of professional contractors, you can change the colour of your wooden furniture into something which looks more relaxing and refreshing. This is not just an ordinary change of polish, but actually using paint. So you have to make up your mind before doing it.

2.   Put some strategy on your trash

Have you ever thought of changing the location of your trash can in the kitchen? Why not put it under your chopping table or your kitchen island? You may want to have a pull-out trash drawer under your furniture so you can directly throw in peelings of vegetables and fruits immediately.

The drawer should not have gaps that would allow flies to get in. The drawer should also slide easily for convenience when using it.

3.   Make your utensils accessible

You have to determine the most common utensils that you are using in your kitchen like knives, spatulas, ladles, and can openers.  Make sure that they are accessible right when you need them. You can hang them near your sink using hooks or even purchase a magnetic strip where you can have you scissors and some steel-based utensils stuck on it right on your wall.

4.   Keep bugs away

The most annoying of all is seeing bugs and flies in your kitchen area. Of course we know that they are carrying bacteria that may cause health problems so we have to keep them away.

The first thing that you can do is ensure they have no passage to your kitchen. Install screens on doors and also windows so you can let fresh air in and at the same time preventing bugs. Avoid using insect sprays in kitchens especially when food is exposed.
